A federal official told NBC News that the passenger was "extremely intoxicated and belligerent." The man, described as American, was shouting "hijack," according to Local 4, an NBC-TV affiliate.
Airline spokeswoman Susan Elliott said in a statement that the man "was quickly restrained" and was taken into custody by officials waiting when the flight landed at Detroit Metropolitan Airport shortly before 4 p.m.
Passenger Michael Shields told Local 4 he was sitting next to the man who was arrested.
"He wanted them to shoot him. He wanted them to punch him. He wanted to fight and he was calling them all sorts of names," Shields said. "(The Marshals) were really calm and collected but the people were pretty nervous, I thought."
Shields said the man began kicking the exit door on the plane.
After the disruptive passenger was detained, Elliott says Flight 235 continued on to Detroit without further issue.
Messages seeking further details and comment were left Tuesday afternoon for airport officials.
