MARYSVILLE, Ind. ? Indiana residents who are considering rebuilding after devastating March 2 tornadoes may find their decisions harder because of poor soil that makes septic systems unreliable.
State law and county regulations require the health department to approve septic systems for those needing building permits. The Clark County Health Department has received four requests from Marysville residents seeking inspections and has granted just two of them.
The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., reports (http://cjky.it/GWbop9 ) that some residents had difficulty gaining approval even before the tornadoes. That's because the area's poor soil and high water table can prevent effluent from being filtered by conventional septic systems.
County officials say they are looking into whether emergency funding is available for a community sanitation system.
About two dozen Marysville homes were destroyed or heavily damaged.
