Part of Outsports? series on our 100 most important moments in gay sports history.
Multisports, 1992: The Gay Games started in 1982 and had been held in North American cities until 1998. In Europe, the EuroGames were created in 1992 to allow more participation from the continent.
The first EuroGames in The Hague, Netherlands, was a cozy affair, with only four sports: badminton, soccer, volleyball and basketball. By 1996, the event had grown to 17 sports and 3,400 athletes.
In 2009 and 2010, the EuroGames were supplanted by the OutGames (Copenhagen 2009) and Gay Games (Cologne 2010), themselves on European soil.
This year?s event will be held in Rotterdam starting July 21 with athletes competing in 20 sports.
