Soldier's slaying in US is bitter irony for family

DENVER (AP) ? Army Spc. Brandy Fonteneaux's death came not on a battlefield in Afghanistan but on an infantry post in Colorado ? allegedly at the hand of a fellow soldier ? and that makes the pain even worse for her family.

The 28-year-old from Houston had been stabbed 74 times when she was found in her room in a Fort Carson barracks on Jan. 8, Army investigators said. Officials said she had also been choked.

"We could have taken this much better if Brandy had been killed in war," said Fonteneaux's aunt, Bevenley Thomas, who raised her from infancy. "But to be murdered here in the U.S. in your barracks in your sleep is just not right."

A court-martial is scheduled to start Monday for Sgt. Vincinte Jackson, an Army combat engineer charged with murder and premeditated murder in Fonteneaux's death.

If convicted, his sentence could range from life in prison with a chance for parole in as few as 10 years to life in prison without possibility of parole, Army officials said.

His attorneys declined to comment.

Jackson, an eight-year Army veteran from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., was 40 at the time of the killing. He was with the 576th Engineer Company, 4th Engineer Battalion. Fonteneaux was a food operations specialist in the 4th Engineer Battalion.

Authorities haven't publicly divulged any motive for the killing. There was no evidence Fonteneaux was sexually assaulted, Thomas said, although Army officials told the family some of her clothing had been removed or pushed up to her neck.

Fonteneaux knew Jackson but they were not close, Thomas said. Fonteneaux had told her family that Jackson confided in her about his crumbling marriage.

Thomas said she asked Fonteneaux if she and Jackson had a romantic relationship, and she replied, "No, Mom, he's married. He's too old."

"I know her like that," Thomas said. "We didn't have secrets."

Jackson deployed to Iraq for five months in 2005-06. He went to Iraq again in February 2009 for about two months and then was sent to Afghanistan for nearly a year. Jackson received the Purple Heart, but the details of his injury were unavailable.

Thomas, also from Houston, said Army officials told her family that Jackson did not show signs of post-traumatic stress at the time of the killing. She still wants the military to pay more attention to servicemen and women returning from combat deployments.

"I definitely want justice, but I also want them to look closer at our soldiers," she said. "The least we can do is to make sure that they are healthy and get themselves back into society."

"I don't understand what's going on out there (at Fort Carson)," she said.

Fort Carson officials say they recognize the effects of multiple combat deployments and have programs in place to help soldiers and their families at the post just outside Colorado Springs.

Mental health teams have been decentralized and placed within Fort Carson's major units to make it easier for soldiers to get help, the post said in a written statement. Nutritional counseling, fitness classes, therapy, child care and other services are also available.

At a pretrial hearing in May, prosecutors and defense lawyers both made an issue of Jackson's mental state, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported.

"Sgt. Jackson had a knife with him and he snapped," said Capt. Jeremy Horn, a defense lawyer. He said prosecutors have no evidence of premeditation.

Prosecutors said Jackson acted with deliberation and could recall the gruesome killing in detail.

Fonteneaux grew up in Houston nurtured by three sets of parents: Thomas, her aunt; Verona Fonteneaux, her biological mother and Thomas' sister; and her godparents.

"I asked my sister if I could raise Brandy," Thomas said. Thomas wanted a child but had suffered miscarriages, and Verona Fonteneaux had five children and financial problems, and needed help, Thomas said.

Brandy Fonteneaux had a nurturing personality herself, her mother and aunt said. When her track teammates at Texas Southern University grew discouraged, she would say, "Hey, let's just give it our best." As a food service specialist in the Army, she would withhold dessert from fellow soldiers facing a fitness test.

She got a degree in kinesiology from Texas Southern and then joined the Army in 2009 to help pay off college loans. All the while she remained close with her family. "She didn't grow up and get away. She grew up and became closer," Thomas said.

She spoke with her family daily by phone, text or Skype until Saturday, Jan. 7, when no one heard from her. The next day, the family asked Fort Carson officials to check on her, and she was found dead in her room.

Since then, it has been hard for her entire extended family, her mother and aunt said. Their houses are lined with photos of the young woman with her broad, beaming smile, and they feel her absence keenly at family gatherings.

"I have my days," Verona Fonteneaux said. "Some days I'm OK. Sometimes I sit and cry."

Charlotte Mayor pressuring colleagues to vote his way?

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- There is drama happening on Charlotte city council over the streetcar and?Mayor Anthony Foxx is responding. At-Large council member Claire Fallon accused?Foxx of threatening her politically if she doesn't support the $119 million streetcar project.

"He told me he wanted it," Fallon said. "And that he was not happy with me and that there would be somebody to run against me."

The mayor's office says?Foxx is disappointed council members would talk to the media and not to him.

The mayor realizes at this point the street car is so divisive, he just wants?a plan that?seven or more council members can agree on.??He also says the plan doesn't?have to include the street car?project.

The drama started when Fallon?said Foxx wants Council member James Mitchell to run for an at-large seat to oust her from her seat next year. Mitchell says he is considering running for an at-large seat but not to seek revenge.

"We run to serve," Mitchell said. "And offer our citizens the best way to run this city forward. If anyone would think that anyone is running to get rid of James Mitchell or David Howard or a Claire Fallon that's not true, and I don't want the citizens to buy into that."

In addition to the alleged threat, there are reports the community is being told if council members vote against the streetcar, those council members are turning their backs on the minority community.

"The stress of our budget process has pushed people's buttons," Council member Michael Barnes said. "And has caused a lot of stress. You got feelings being hurt right now."

The controversial streetcar project would raise taxes -?about three percent for taxpayers, that's something Fallon can't support.

"I am not sending anybody over the edge that's on the edge," Fallon said. "And there are a lot of people in this town on the edge, alright. They are up to here with taxes."

Barnes believes Charlotte can't handle paying for the streetcar alone.? He wants other partners before moving forward on the streetcar.

"We should work collectively," Barnes said. ?"With Republicans and Demo carts to secure funding to deal with paying for the streetcar."

Mitchell believes the city can't wait for that to happen.

"The challenge among this city council," Mitchell said. ?"How do we accomplish things on a local level that we can control and not wait on Raleigh or Washington DC for funding."

The mayor has scheduled a meeting for all the council members against the street car project.

A vote on the streetcar takes place December 17th.

Basic Cover Letter Do's and Don'ts |

Posted on December 7, 2012 | in Advice & Tips, Cover Letters | by doostang

freedigitalphotos.net

Stop debating whether or not you should include a cover letter with your resume because in today?s hard knock job market, you should ALWAYS include one (unless a job listing specifically asks you not to). The cover letter is your opportunity to introduce yourself to an employer, tell them a little about yourself, and explain why you think you?d be the best fit for the job. So it?s safe to say that half-assing this document isn?t going to get you where you want to be, which is in the employer?s office for an interview.

With all the questions I?ve been fielding lately on the cover letter front, I thought it was a good time to address the subject with a do and don?t list to make your job search a little easier.

Do personalize your letter if possible. If you put in the effort of trying to find out whose desk this letter will land on and aren?t having any luck, then ?Dear Hiring Manager,? will have to suffice. I?ve used it and have gotten the call back so I can tell you it does work, but if you can get a name, that?s what will initially separate you from the rest of the pack.

Don?t use a generic template you found online. You absolutely must tailor your cover letter (and resume) to fit the company and position.? Here?s why.

Do be brief and specific. Your cover letter should be three to four short paragraphs that state where you saw the job listing or who referred you to the job, what you can offer the company and position, and a call to action stating how you plan to follow up. And when talking specifics, use short bullet points showing your biggest accomplishments that apply to the position.? A few bullet points on a page full of text will make your key accomplishments stand out.

Don?t restate your resume. If the company takes the time to address what skills and qualifications they are looking for, be sure to address what skills and qualifications (out of the ones listed) you can fulfill. Pick one previous example of a past project and explain what you achieved and how it can relate to the position you?re applying for. If you?re applying for a sales job, give the reader detailed information on an account you nailed. Save the rest of your job history for your resume.

Do include your contact information. When you end your letter with your name, also include your preferred phone number, your email address, your current place of residence, and in some cases, your social footprint. I?ve seen more job postings asking applicants to include links to their social media accounts. To make this simple for both you and the employer, include a link to your about.me page (if you don?t have one, consider creating one), which hosts links to all of your social media profiles in one spot.

Don?t end on a passive note. Show an employer you care about landing this position with a call to action. Instead of ending with, ?I hope to hear from you soon,? write that you will follow up within a week to make sure your materials were received and to hopefully set up a time to talk about the position. Just don?t forget to follow up! If you?re unsure of how to follow up after sending a job application, try this.

Low fat diet is key to a slimmer figure, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2012) ? Exchanging fatty foods for lower fat alternatives will help people shift around three-and-a-half pounds -- without any other form of dieting. People taking part in trials also saw their waist-lines become slimmer, and levels of bad cholesterol decrease. The results demonstrate that weight loss can happen without actively trying to lose weight beyond simply choosing foods lower in fat.

The report was commissioned by the World Health Organisation (WHO) Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group (NUGAG) Subgroup on Diet and Health following a request to update their guidelines on total fat intake. The results will be crucial in making global recommendations.

The research is particularly important because being overweight or obese increases the risk of many cancers, coronary heart disease and stroke. Reductions in total fat were also associated with small but statistically significant reductions in cholesterols and blood pressure, suggesting a beneficial effect on other major cardiovascular risk factors.

The systematic review included results from 33 randomised controlled trials, in North America, Europe and New Zealand, involving 73,589 men, women and children.

Those taking part had varying states of health. Comparisons were made between those eating less fat than usual (intervention group) and those eating their usual amount of fat (control group). The effect on weight and waist line was measured after at least six months.

The results show that eating less fat reduces body weight by 1.6kg, BMI by 0.56kg/m? and waist circumference by 0.5cm. All these effects were in trials in which weight loss was not the intended outcome, suggesting that they occur in people with normal diets. The weight loss happened quickly and was maintained over at least seven years.

The research was led by Dr Lee Hooper from UEA's Norwich Medical School. She said: "The weight reduction that we found when people ate less fat was remarkably consistent -- we saw it in almost every trial. Those who cut down more on fat, lost more weight.

"The effect isn't dramatic, like going on a diet. The research specifically looked at people who were cutting down on fat, but didn't aim to lose weight -- so they were continuing to consume a normal amount of food. What surprised us was that they did lose weight, their BMI decreased and their waists became slimmer. On top of this, they kept their weight down over at least seven years. There isn't a specific goal, the more fat you cut down, the more your weight falls.

"We didn't consider different types of fat in this study," said Dr Hooper. "But cutting down on saturated fat reduces our risk of heart disease and strokes, so the healthiest way to cut down on fat is to cut down on saturated fats.

"This means having low fat milk and yogurt, cutting down on butter and cheese, and cutting the fat off meat. Most importantly have fruit instead of fatty snacks like biscuits, cake and crisps. And remember, this isn't a diet, so don't take it to extremes, but work out a way of eating that you can stick to permanently.

"Keeping healthy is not just about fat and weight -- but cutting down on fat, especially saturated fat, is a great start. Being physically active, not smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation, eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, and drinking plenty of fluid also help to keep us healthy. We just need to get in the habit of doing these things," she added.

Co-author Prof Carolyn Summerbell, from Durham University, said: "A healthy diet is a way of eating that people can sustain over time. That's the trick, to find a comfortable way to eat that you can stick to for life which helps you maintain your weight. Cutting down on fat will help.

"Doing exercise and being physically active is good for maintaining weight and also has other health benefits, but it's not a replacement for a healthy diet."

The small amount of data available for children in the same analysis confirmed a relationship between total fat intake and subsequent weight change. Further trials are needed to examine the effect of reducing fat intake on body weight in developing countries as well as in children.

Sony launches web store for PlayStation games, movies and TV shows

Sony launches webstore for PlayStation games, movies and TV shows

Catching up to Microsoft's own web-based Xbox store, Sony's unleashed a new online store for its movie, TV and video content-- but neglected to mention it. Titled the Sony Entertainment Network, and separate to its own book store we were able to login to the UK site and found that content pricing matched what we've seen on the PlayStation Store and other Sony digital shops. As an example, the complete Mass Effect trilogy rings in at £60 ($96), although Sony is kind enough to offer links to discounted titles, PlayStation Plus highlights and other offers at the top of the browsing sidebar -- Tokyo Jungle is today's holiday deal at £5 ($8). Purchases can be done through the store, with the product downloaded to your game console when it's turned on next. Video content, meanwhile, can be purchased and then played on your PC, as well as on the PlayStation 3, PS Vita, PSP, Sony Tablets and compatible Xperia smartphones. Even if you're balking at some of those early prices, it might be worth browsing through some more palatable festive deals by visiting the source below. We'll have more when we hear the official line from Sony.

Update: We've been unable to access our downloads just yet, something that was also noted by Eurogamer, which spotted that content can also be purchased through Paypal. PlayStation Blog manager Fred Dutton has added that the store is currently under testing, and that Sony are set to announce the full details of the service soon -- no harm in taking an early look, however.
