Monster Clarity HD Model One

After focusing on headphones for the last few years, Monster, which recently dropped the word "Cables" from its company name, has moved into the speaker realm. The Clarity HD Model One is a pair of speakers that defies simple categorization?taller than a typical desktop or PC speaker pair, but not really a bookshelf speaker pair, either. One thing is for sure: They're expensive. At $749.95 (direct) for the pair, the Model One is a serious investment. The overall design of the self-powered system isn't quite up to snuff with the competition in this price range. But audio performance is undeniably powerful, with no distortion at top volumes and a delivery that, at more reasonable listening levels, brings out the best in music of all genres.

Design
These speakers are big. Wedge-shaped, and quite tall, they measure 15.5 by 9 by 6 inches (HWD). The front panel of each is protected by a transparent metallic speaker grille. Behind the grille, each speaker houses a 1-inch tweeter and a 6.5-inch woofer. Handle grips are built-in to the top panels of both speakers, where the right speaker also has an iPod/iPhone docking area, a Power button, and rubberized Volume knob.

Visually, the Clarity HD Model One?isn't going to impress everyone?the glossy look, the metallic grilles (that bend very easily when pressed), combined with their substantial height will make them stand out. And that's before we get to the color options, which are silver, bronze, red, or yellow. Slap on some logos and slogans, and they end with more of a recording studio feel than a living room look.

On the right speaker's rear panel, there's a high frequency level selector up near the top?it can be set to Flat (0), -2dB, or +2dB. This knob is a bit unique?you often find bass level adjustment knobs on speaker systems, or both high and low frequency adjusters, but rarely the high frequency adjuster on its own. I recommend leaving the knob in the flat position, but the slight tweak can be useful if you use the speakers in a particularly reflective space with lots of glass or marble, or one with lots of sound-absorbing surfaces, like carpets, sofas, and curtains. Both of these types of environments can have an effect on the perceived levels of high frequencies. Monster Clarity HD Model One colors

There's an 8-pin DIN connection port to the Left Speaker (and an extremely long cable is provided, so getting a wide stereo image shouldn't be a problem); a 3.5mm input for computers, MP3 players, and mobile devices; an RCA input for televisions or stereo component outputs; and left and right 1/4-inch inputs for mixers or pro-audio gear. The connector for the power cable is situated on the bottom of the rear panel. The left speaker's rear panel, meanwhile, has only the connection to the right speaker, and a vertical slogan that reads "because the music matters."

When an iPhone or iPod is docked, it defeats the inputs from other cabled devices. But a system like this, that aims to more or less replace the need for a stereo receiver by powering speakers internally, should have a source selection button so you can easily choose between RCA, iPhone, or 3.5mm inputs, instead of relying on the internal circuitry to make the decisions for you.

Unfortunately, there are no cables?other than the speaker connection cable?included for the system?a curious exclusion from a company that only recently removed the word "Cable" from its name. So, you'll need to supply your own 1/4-inch, RCA, and 3.5mm to make use of any of the inputs aside from the iPhone/iPod dock input.

There is also no video output, which makes it impossible to watch video from your iPhone on a big screen while listening to the audio through the speakers, unless you involve external devices. There are four adapter trays for the various supported?iPod and iPhone models, and a tiny, flimsy-feeling remote control with limited functionality?only Volume, Mute, Play/Pause, and Track Forward/Backward/Scan. There's no iPod menu navigation.

Performance
Regardless of the design, there's no denying the Clarity HD Model One system is very powerful. At maximum volume, which is extremely loud?louder than you'll likely ever need in a typical home use scenario, even when you are partying late into the night?the speakers never distort, even on deep bass tracks like the Knife's "Silent Shout," which has made a distorted mess of many speakers at even 75 percent volume.?

So at top volumes, you'll have a clean signal, but how do the speakers sound? While audiophiles may want to spend their cash on a more typical, non-powered, flat-response bookshelf speaker set, like the Paradigm Mini Monitors, those who enjoy deep bass but still crave a nice level of balance should definitely give the Model Ones a listen. There's some serious low-end presence here, but it's not over the top, and never muddles things. The primary area of focus seems to be more on the mids and highs, and not on making this system a thumping, low-frequency juggernaut.

Hip-hop and heavier rock tracks sound particularly powerful on the Clarity HD Model One, with bass lines playing a slightly secondary role to higher-pitched percussion and guitar licks. Radiohead's "Staircase," with its punchy bass groove, sounds fantastic, but it's the guitar line mimicking the bass, as well as the cymbal and percussion work, and of course, the vocals, that take center stage. The louder you turn things up, the more the bass becomes a larger part of the mix, but that's probably more psycho-acoustics than reality, and at moderate levels, the bass is still well-represented.

On instrumental tracks like the John Adams' modern classical piece, "The Chairman Dances," the system's substantial low end gives an excellent presence to the lower-register strings that can often get lost in the mix, but the stars of the show are the high frequency occupants, like the wooden percussion, flutes, and higher-register strings. The brass section in particular benefits from the nice balance between lows, mids, and highs, allowing both the growl and the resonance of the trombones to push through the mix.

We haven't tested too many speaker systems in this high price range. Of those we have reviewed, most have fallen into the category of AirPlay speaker docks, like the Libratone Live ($699.95, 3.5 stars) or the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air ($599.95, 4 stars. Both of these systems are design pieces that make the Clarity HD Model One look a bit bland. Sonically, all offer solid audio quality, as well, but none of the speaker docks we've tested can come close in power to the Clarity HD Model One.?

If all of these systems are too pricey for your budget, but you'd still like a strong pair of stereo speakers for your computer and mobile devices, check out the excellent, simple Audioengine 5+ ($399, 4.5 stars). And if that price is still too high, the affordable Harman Kardon SoundSticks III ($169.95, 4.5 stars) are old standbys?not nearly on the sonic level of the aforementioned systems, but a great bargain for the price. The Clarity HD Model One cannot be described as a bargain?it's a bit overpriced given its design shortcomings, like the lack of a Source button and the limited remote control. There's no arguing that it's one of the loudest, cleanest systems we've tested, however, and at safe volumes, it represents every genre quite well.

Proprietary estoppel: equity potentially binding on third parties ...

In?Chin Lan Hong v Cheung Poh Choo ([2004] HKEC 64) a daughter lived in a room in the house that had been the family home. She occupied the room as her father?s licensee. The father had transferred title to the home to his concubine and some of her children to put it beyond the reach of creditors. The court found that the father?s intention when transferring the title to his children was to retain the beneficial ownership during his lifetime.?The children sought to recover possession from the daughter.

The daughter claimed that her father had represented to her that she would always be entitled to a room in the house that had been the family home. This was an assurance said to have been given both expressly and through an alleged family tradition that unmarried daughters would be housed by the father. She claimed to have relied on this assurance to her detriment. As a result she claimed to be entitled to rely on proprietary estoppel to resist the eviction. ?The judge found that there had been no detrimental reliance even if there had been an assurance. It is interesting to note that as the children were volunteers, the judge was of the view that their legal title would have been subject to the daughter?s prior equitable interest had the proprietary estoppel claim succeeded.

Tests find only marijuana in face-chewer's system

FILE - This undated file booking photo made available by the Miami-Dade Police Dept. shows Rudy Eugene, 31, who was shot and killed by Miami-Dade Police after he refused to stop eating another man's face in Miami on May 26, 2012. (AP Photo/Miami-Dade Police Dept., File)

(AP) ? Lab tests detected only marijuana in the system of a Florida man shot while chewing on another man's face, the medical examiner said Wednesday, ruling out other street drugs including the components typically found in the stimulants known as "bath salts."

There has been much speculation about what drugs, if any, would lead to the bizarre behavior that authorities said Rudy Eugene exhibited before and during the gruesome attack that left the other man horribly disfigured. A Miami police union official had suggested that Eugene, who was shot and killed by an officer, was probably under the influence of bath salts.

The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner said in a news release that the toxicology detected marijuana, but it didn't find any other street drugs, alcohol or prescription drugs. Eugene also tested negative for adulterants commonly mixed with street drugs.

The department ruled out the most common components found in so-called bath salts, which mimic the effects of cocaine or methamphetamine and have been associated with bizarre crimes in recent months. An outside forensic toxicology lab, which took a second look at the results, also confirmed the absence of bath salts, synthetic marijuana and LSD.

Messages left with the medical examiner's office for comment were not immediately returned.

The Drug Enforcement Administration last year temporarily outlawed the possession and sale of three synthetic stimulants sometimes packaged as "bath salts." Several states have also moved to ban the drugs, often sold on the Internet and in head shops and other retail outlets. The bans don't affect the kinds of bath salts added to tubs for their fragrance and cosmetic benefits.

An expert on toxicology testing said that marijuana alone wasn't likely to cause behavior as strange as Eugene's.

"The problem today is that there is an almost an infinite number of chemical substances out there that can trigger unusual behavior," said Dr. Bruce Goldberger, Professor and Director of Toxicology at the University of Florida.

Goldberger said that the medical examiner's office in Miami is known for doing thorough work and that he's confident they and the independent lab covered as much ground as possible. But it's nearly impossible for toxicology testing to keep pace with new formulations of synthetic drugs.

"There are many of these synthetic drugs that we currently don't have the methodology to test on, and that is not the fault of the toxicology lab. The challenge today for the toxicology lab is to stay on top of these new chemicals and develop methodologies for them, but it's very difficult and very expensive." Goldberger said. "There is no one test or combination of tests that can detect every possible substance out there."

An addiction expert said she wouldn't rule out marijuana causing the agitation.

"It could have been the strain of marijuana that increases the dopamine in the brain, such as sativa," said Dr. Patricia Junquera, assistant professor at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

There are two strains of marijuana called sativa and indica. The sativa increases dopamine and gives you energy while decreasing pain threshold. Indica is a "sleepy high," she explained.

"People don't really know what the amount of either is in each little packet of marijuana," she explained. "And we can't differentiate between the two in the blood, much less in a dead person."

She also suggested that if Eugene had a mental disorder, "the marijuana could have increased even further the dopamine levels and aggravated the situation. So that can't be ruled out."

It's not clear what led to the May 26 attack on Ronald Poppo, a 65-year-old homeless man who remains hospitalized. Eugene's friends and family have said he was religious, not violent and that he didn't drink or do drugs harder than marijuana.

"There's no answer for it, not really," Eugene's younger brother, Marckenson Charles, said in an interview. "Anybody who knew him knows this wasn't the person we knew him to be. Whatever triggered him, there is no answer for this."

Surveillance video from a nearby building shows Eugene stripping Poppo and pummeling him, before appearing to hunch over and lie on top of him. The police officer who shot Eugene to death said he growled at the officer when he told him to stop.

Charles, Eugene's brother, said the family does not plan to pursue any legal action against the police for shooting Eugene.

"They used the force they felt was necessary, even if we don't agree with that,' he said.

He said that Eugene has been buried.

Shortly before the attack, a person driving on the MacArthur Causeway told a 911 dispatcher a "completely naked man" was on top of one of the light poles on the causeway and "acting like Tarzan." Still, police have said little about what may prompted Eugene to attack Poppo.

Poppo has undergone several surgeries and remains hospitalized. His left eye was removed, but doctors said earlier this month they were trying to find a way to restore vision in his right eye. He will need more surgeries before he can explore the options for reconstructing his face, doctors have said. A message left with the hospital was not immediately returned.

Poppo's family has said it had no contact with him for more than 30 years and thought he was dead.

Eugene's girlfriend, meanwhile, has said he never showed any signs of violence. Yovonka Bryant said she and Eugene often read the Bible and the Quran together, and often watched a religious television program in the mornings. She said she never saw Eugene drink and only saw him smoke marijuana once at a party.

A Suprise Mini Backyard Spruce Up #KmartOutdoor - The WiC Project

There are people in this world who are very giving. The kind of people that will give you their last dollar if you need it. Who will listen, support, and encourage you. I am fortunate enough to know such a person, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to pay his kindness forward by treating him at a surprise mini backyard spruce up.

My mission, which I chose to accept, was to stealthily visit the local Kmart undetected and pick up a few critical items that would be needed for this surprise. Luckily, this person has been talking for weeks, if not months, about how he wants to get a nice patio set for his deck. He also mentioned that he was interested in a water fountain for the soothing and relaxing sounds. I wasn?t sure what I would find at Kmart but I went in with determination.

Kmart Outdoor Living Section

Kmart Outdoor CatalogI easily found the Outdoor Living section and was impressed. They had a wide selection of patio sets, outdoor furniture, and outdoor decor items. You can take a look at some of the items that were available through my shopping album. For some more products and outdoor decorating ideas, you can also browse the?Kmart Outdoor Catalog. The Kmart Social Circular also has some great ideas of how you can make your outdoor space as comfortable as your indoor space. With so many great options, it took me quite awhile to finally decide which table and decorations I would get. Here were my final selections:

Kmart Selections

When I check out at Kmart, I made sure to use my Shop Your Way Rewards card. If you don?t have your card, you should. Along with earning points that you can redeem for cash off your purchase, you also receive some amazing coupons and offers when you check out.

Once I got everything home, it was time to let the sprucing up begin. Starting out, we just had a plain ?ole deck with a doghouse. There isn?t any place to sit, there are no decorations, and the only shade comes late in the afternoon when the sun falls beneath the roof.

Backyard Before

First, I set-up the little welcome bunny. I didn?t get a chance to pick up a plant yet, but the bunny is sitting next to the gate, welcoming everyone to the deck. If you love the bunny as much as I do, know that it?s currently on sale for just $27.99, marked down from $40.99.

Welcome Bunny

Now that the entrance was ready, I set-up the bistro patio set. This set fit perfectly on the deck, providing comfortable seating for two while still leaving enough room to walk around. It was easy to assemble and looked amazing.

Bistro Set

For some added shade, I set-up the umbrella next to it. I made sure to pick-up an umbrella base to keep it standing up.

Table, Umbrella, Chairs

For the finishing touch, I set-up the 3-vase water fountain on the other side of the gate. I filled it with water and powered it on. The yard was immediately filled with the soothing sound of running water.

Vase Water Fountain

From start to finish, it took just a little under an hour to get everything set-up. The longest part was assembling the table, which was still very quick and easy to do.

When the spruced up yard was finally revealed, it was total amazement. I heard ?I was just talking about needing a patio set for the yard!? and ?I was wanting to get a water fountain!? It was a wonderful feeling knowing that I was able to give something that was wanted to someone who never asks for anything and it was great knowing that I was able to bring a big smile to his face. There were hugs, grins and enjoyment all around.

Team maps the nuclear landscape

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

An Oak Ridge National Laboratory and University of Tennessee team has used the Department of Energy's Jaguar supercomputer to calculate the number of isotopes allowed by the laws of physics.

The team, led by Witek Nazarewicz, used a quantum approach known as density functional theory, applying it independently to six leading models of the nuclear interaction to determine that there are about 7,000 possible combinations of protons and neutrons allowed in bound nuclei with up to 120 protons (a hypothetical element called "unbinilium"). The team's results are presented in the June 28 issue of the journal Nature.

Most of these nuclei have not been observed experimentally.

"They are bound, meaning they do not spit out protons or neutrons," Nazarewicz explained. "But they are radioactive?they are short-lived, because there are other processes, such as beta decay, that can give rise to transmutations."

Of the total, about 3,000 have been seen in nature or produced in nuclear physics laboratories. The others are created in massive stars or in violent stellar explosions.

The computations allowed the team to identify the nuclear drip lines that mark the borders of nuclear existence. For each number of protons in a nucleus, there is a limit to how many neutrons are allowed. For example, a helium nucleus, which contains two protons, can hold no more than six neutrons. If another neutron is added to the nucleus, it will simply "drip" off. Likewise, there is a limit to the number of protons that can be added to a nucleus with a given number of neutrons. Placement of the drip lines for heavier elements is based on theoretical predictions extrapolated far from experimental data and is, therefore, uncertain.

The closer an isotope is to one of these drip lines the faster it decays into more stable forms. Particle accelerators have been unable to identify most of these exotic isotopes, especially those approaching the neutron drip line, because they are impossible to produce using current combinations of beams and targets. In fact, said Nazarewicz, all radioactive isotopes decay until they are transformed into one of 288 isotopes that form the so-called "valley of stability." These stable isotopes have half-lives longer than the expected lifetime of the solar system (about 4.6 billion years).

Earlier estimates of the nuclear landscape varied from as few as 5,000 to as many as 12,000 possible nuclei, Nazarewicz noted. He said his team's calculations were based on the microscopic forces that cause neutrons and protons to cluster into nuclei, adding that results from the six separate models were surprisingly consistent. By using several models, theorists were able for the first time to quantify uncertainties of predicted drip lines.

Because most of these nuclei are beyond our experimental reach, he explained, models must conform to known nuclei in a way that allows researchers to extrapolate results for exotic nuclei. Insight on the nature of most exotic nuclei must be extrapolated from models, he said.

"This is not a young field," Nazarewicz noted. "Over the years we've tried to improve the models of the nucleus to include more and more knowledge and insights. We are building a nuclear model based on the best theoretical input guided by the best experimental data."

The calculations themselves were massive, with each set of nuclei taking about two hours to calculate on the 244,256-processor Jaguar system. Nazarewicz noted that each of these runs needed to include about 250,000 possible nuclear configurations.

"Such calculation would not be possible two to three years ago," he said. "Jaguar has provided a unique opportunity for nuclear theory."

Nazarewicz noted that this work, supported by DOE's Office of Science -- which also supports the Jaguar supercomputer -- and by the Academy of Finland, has both existential value, helping us to get a better understanding of the evolution of the universe, and potential practical applications.

"We are not doing nuclear physics just to see whether you can get 7,000 species," he explained. "There are various nuclei that we can use to our advantage, eventually. Those we call 'designer nuclei.'"

Among these valuable nuclei are iron-45, a collection of 26 protons and 19 neutrons, which may help us understand superconductivity between protons; a pear-shaped radium-225, with 88 protons and 137 neutrons, which will help us understand why there is more matter than antimatter in the universe; and terbium-149, with 65 protons and 84 neutrons, which has shown an ability to attach to antibodies and irradiate cancer cells without affecting healthy cells.

"They have done experiments on mice and now humans in which they would look at the effectiveness of this treatment," he said. "This treatment is called an 'alpha knife.'

"Applications will certainly follow from the basic knowledge."

Baby chimp mauled to death in front of LA zoo visitors

By Andrew Mach, msnbc.com

An adult chimpanzee mauled a baby chimp to death Tuesday inside their exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo in front of a crowd of visitors, zoo officials said.

The 3-month-old chimp was the first to be born at the zoo habitat in 13 years, and she was gradually being introduced to the coed troop of 15 adults when an adult male chimpanzee fatally injured her in their habitat, zoo spokesperson Jason Jacobs said in a statement.

Los Angeles Zoo

Gracie, a chimp at the Los Angeles Zoo, holds her baby. The unnamed infant was mauled to death by an adult male chimp Tuesday.

The unnamed infant was born in early March to a chimp at the zoo named Gracie, who ?had proven to be a caring mother,? the zoo said. Gracie was allowed to keep the chimp overnight to grieve her loss. ?

Zoo staff didn?t witness the attack, but said it happened in front of a crowd of visitors.

?I did talk to a couple of visitors as I was coming up here, tried to help them process what they had seen,? Director John Lewis told NBCLosAngeles.com. ?We also had some other visitors help us get a better understanding.?

Deputy Director Denis Verret said grief counseling was made available for visitors and staff.

Zoo officials said acts of aggression among the troop of chimps were not expected.

?Everything that we saw has been positive, all the chimps have been very interested, wanting to either be close to, or touch the baby,? Jennie Becker, the zoo?s curator of mammals, told KCAL-TV.

Male chimpanzees are well known for violence, including the killing of the young. Scientists speculate that clashes over stomping grounds might fuel these conflicts, and the human encroachment on chimpanzee territory, such as in zoo environments, may exacerbate them.

Studies and observations in recent years have also shown that male chimpanzees often attack the infants of rival chimps both in the wild and in captivity, especially if a desired female is involved, according to zoo officials.

?Chimpanzee behavior can sometimes be aggressive and violent and the zoo is sorry that visitors had to be exposed to this,? Jacobs said. ?This is a heartbreaking and tragic loss for the zoo and especially for the Great Ape Team who have worked diligently to care for the infant and its mother since birth.?

Zoo officials were still investigating the circumstances behind the attack but said they may need to consider changing their approach to new arrivals.

?We?re going to have to consider, at what age maybe we introduce babies to the group,? Becker said. ?I didn?t think that this was going to be a problem. These are all experienced, social chimps.?

The zoo in Griffith Park houses on of the nation?s largest troops of chimpanzee ? 15 in all ? in a North American zoo, officials said.?

8 things to do if you haven't planned for retirement

Bill Haber / AP file

Retirees of the future will find their experience much different from their parents' golden years.

By Samuel Weigley, 24/7 Wall St.

??Once people reach their 50s they finally see retirement on the horizon. They start envisioning that time when they can stop going to work and instead spend their days on the golf course, on the beach or with their families. Yet many people have not saved nearly enough for retirement by the time they are 50 years old. A recent survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute found that 60 percent of workers born between 1946 and 1964 have less than $100,000 for retirement. In fact, 40 percent have saved less than $25,000.

24/7 Wall St. interviewed retirement-related experts from brokerage firms, banks, retirement advocacy groups, and independent financial advisers. With their help, 24/7 identified the eight actions you should take if you have not prepared to retire.

Financial advisers generally recommend people begin saving for retirement starting in their 20s to take full advantage of compounding interest. Although the financial advisers who spoke to 24/7 Wall St. say it is very hard to give concrete estimates on how much should be allocated toward equities and fixed-income, they say it is best to cut risk as one approaches their target retirement age.

24/7 Wall St.: America's richest school districts

Not saving up enough for retirement used to be less of a problem. Workers in previous generations often received pensions from their employers, allowing retirees to know exactly how much money they would get once retired. But employers have increasingly shifted that responsibility onto the employees through 401k and other defined contribution plans.

These days, notes Joe Ready, executive vice president for retirement at Wells Fargo, people get married and have children later in life than previous generations. This means that it is increasingly hard to save for retirement during the 40s and 50s because they still face heavy financial obligations -- they are still paying off their mortgage, sending their children to college and so on.

The fact that many current retirees are living off pensions has conditioned younger generations to think their retirement might be the same, says Lule Demmissie, managing director of retirement for TD Ameritrade. ?Face it,? Demmissie says, ?your retirement isn?t your parents? retirement.?

Demmissie notes that people in retirement today are working until a later age and finding cheaper housing as they no longer can count on that pension that was once provided to employees. She also points out that while many people have never saved enough for retirement, the problem has become worse once the financial crisis took hold.

24/7 Wall St.: 13 ways to sell your home this year

By the time you reach age 50, you should have roughly four times your annual income built up in retirement, according to Jean Setzfand, vice president for financial security for AARP. The best way to reach that goal is to start socking away money starting in your 20s. Still, if you are well behind on your goals by the time you reach your 50s, all hope is not lost.

These are the eight things to do if you have not planned for retirement.

1. Reassess life priorities
Part of reassessing priorities is ensuring you have a plan in place. People should have a retirement plan when they are significantly younger than 50, yet EBRI finds that only 42 percent of workers of all ages have a retirement plan.

If, at the age of 50, people find themselves inadequately prepared for their dream retirement, they should start by looking at the future, advises Setzfand. ?The first thing people should do is consider, ?What do I want to do with the rest of my life??? The answer to that question will help decide what actions need to be taken, Setzfand explains. Before moving forward, it is important to ask such questions as ?Do I really need that second house in Florida?? or ?Can I (afford to) start a trust fund for my grandkids??

People need to consider how much they are willing and able to fund their children's college education. Setzfand notes that many parents in their 50s will foot most or all of their children?s college bill to make sure their children don?t end up with debt early in life. However, she cautions people to be careful to make sure they have enough money to build and sustain their own retirement nest egg. After all, you can?t borrow to fund your golden years.

2. Take advantage of increased contribution limits
If you are late saving for retirement, you may need an extra boost to get closer to your goals. Once people reach age 50, the amount of money they can contribute annually to their 401k and their IRA increases from $17,000 to $22,500 and from $5,000 to $6,000, respectively.?Employees should take advantage of these higher contribution limits if possible, since contributions to these plans are tax deductible.

Plus, many employers match contributions up to a certain amount, meaning that employees are forgoing free money if they do not contribute the maximum contribution amount. ?If you have access to a 401k, jump into it with two feet,? Ready says.

3. Downsize
Advisers also recommend downsizing. While the level of downsizing for some could mean simply cutting down on small expenses such as eating out and shopping, for others, more drastic measures may be necessary.

?Downsizing often isn?t something that can be done on the peripheral,? Demmissie says. For some, it may even mean downsizing the house, especially if there is a lot of equity on the property.

Those eyeing retirement can even plan to move in with their adult children. Demmissie notes there has been an increase in multiple generations living under one roof. While living with children is not necessarily part of most people?s dream retirement, it can help make sure retirees do not outlive their money by cutting out housing costs and even some home-care costs. Moving to places with lower tax rates and costs of living, Demmissie notes, may also help people live their more ideal retirement at a lower cost.

4. Keep working
With people living longer than generations past, the traditional retirement age of 65 is generally increasing and will continue to do so. About 40 percent of current American employees plan to continue working until at least age 70, according to a 2011 study by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies.

Working until a later age, whether full-time or part-time, gives people more time to build their nest egg while also reducing the likelihood that they will run out of money during their golden years. Plus, if someone truly enjoys his or her job, continuing to work in some capacity is not necessarily a bad thing. ?I always believed retirement was fictional,? says John Sestina, founder of John E. Sestina and Company in Columbus, Ohio. ?Why does someone have to quit working if they are productive, and what are they going to do to replace that in their life? You can only play so many rounds of golf.?

People still need to take into consideration that their employment status could change due to circumstances such as a layoff or deteriorating health, says George Middleton, an adviser with Limoges Investment Management in Portland, Ore. ?A lot of my clients say they will just keep working,? he says. ?I always tell them ?but what if you can?t???

24/7 Wall St.: States with the safest hospitals

5. Factor in health care costs
Another burden facing retirees in the relatively near future is rapidly growing health care costs. A 65-year old couple who retires in 2012 should plan for $240,000 for medical costs, according to a study by Fidelity, provided the couple does not receive employer-sponsored health coverage. This figure, on average, has risen 6 percent annually since 2002.

Diane Pearson, a financial adviser at Legend Financial Advisors in Pittsburgh, says higher health care costs in recent years have changed the way she has counseled clients on retirement. She used to try to get her clients? nest eggs to accrue 2 percent more than inflation each year, but now that number is close to 6 percent due to rising health costs.

?People generally underestimate the amount of money they?ll need in retirement,? Pearson says, noting that health care predictions play a major role in that underestimation. ?The rule of thumb has been spending 75 percent to 85 percent in retirement of what you were spending while you were working full-time. I think that?s absolutely false.? Pearson says the amount spent in retirement likely will be about the same spent in your working years.

6. Don?t play catch up
If someone has failed to save enough for retirement by their 50s, it may be tempting to build a portfolio full of stocks to play catch-up. The financial experts interviewed by 24/7 Wall St. generally advise against this move. While some stocks are still important in a portfolio to help manage inflation, a bad stretch in the stock market can completely devastate a person?s financial goals. ?That?s financial suicide,? Sestina calls such a move. ?They can?t afford the risk with so little time.?

Middleton says he counsels his clients to take on as little risk as possible in order to reach their retirement goals. Someone who has not saved anything for retirement by age 50 would need to take more, but not excessively more, risk than someone who saved since they were in their 20s. ?I just warn (clients) that the plan might not work,? Middleton says.

7. Beware of financial scams
When people have not saved enough for retirement, they feel overwhelmed and are willing to take drastic measures to try to reach their retirement goals, including falling for financial scams such as the ?get rich quick? and ?work from home? schemes. Those ages 60 and older lost at least $2.9 billion due to these scams in 2010, according to a recent joint study from Metlife Mature Market Institute, the National Committee for Prevention of Elder Abuse and Virginia Tech University.

Setzfand says that when people are approached about financial products, they need to do research to make sure the product really can help achieve their financial goals. She also recommends people do some research on the broker trying to sell the product to make sure no sanctions have been levied on the broker. ?If something looks too good to be true, it?s too good to be true,? Setzfand says.

8. Do not skimp on insurance
While socking a higher portion of your income in your 50s may help build up a dream retirement fund, it is important to keep up with insurance payments in order to prepare for the unexpected. Such plans as life insurance and long-term care insurance can ensure a person?s spouse or children aren?t financially devastated in case of unfortunate events.

Since life insurance is relatively affordable, Middleton says he has not noticed many people going without it. However, he is concerned many are forgoing long-term care insurance due to its high cost. Middleton says not having long-term care insurance can ?completely destroy an estate? if a spouse happens to need that level of care in the future.
