Genome promises tastier tomatoes

The successful sequencing of the tomato genome will lead to tastier varieties within five years say scientists.

They believe that the elusive flavour of home grown tomatoes will by then be widely available in supermarkets.

Writing in the journal Nature, the researchers say the genetic information could reduce the need for pesticides.

The authors believe the genome will also boost conventional breeding techniques over genetic modification.

While the sheer numbers and varieties of tomatoes available in UK shops have increased substantially in the past 20 years, many consumers would complain that this growth has been at the expense of flavour.

Scientists like Professor Graham Seymour at the University of Nottingham would tend to agree.

"In the early 1990s what changed the tomato industry was the use of non-ripening mutant genes, genes that came from natural mutations that have been used to extend shelf life in the fruit.

But this has been quite a blunt instrument, because when you slow ripening down you also slow down those other processes like flavour development and colour development."

Long lasting fruit

As part of an international team of more than 300 scientists from 14 countries, Professor Seymour and his colleagues believe that the successful deciphering of the tomato genome will have a major impact on a global industry worth between $30bn and $40bn annually.

"Now that we have the genome it will be possible to actually target the genes that control flavour separately from those that control shelf life. So it should be possible in the very near future to have tomatoes that last a long time but develop a very dark red colour, are full of phyto chemicals and are much more tasty."

Another member of the team Dr Gerard Bishop from Imperial College London says the publication of the genome marks a "step change" in the way we breed tomatoes.

"Yield has been the big driver behind most of the breeding strategies and now the push is to go over to flavour. We now have the ability to breed varieties more quickly, it's going to provide us with more intricate ways of precisely breeding the varieties we really want."

And these new varieties will be on the shelves very soon according to Prof Seymour.

"I only work with a couple of companies but I know that they are putting through some of these new traits and they are going to their elite lines - but all tomato breeding companies will be taking this up now so you would expect to see a number of new products over the next 3-5 years."

However the publication of the tomato genome will raise fears in some people that scientists will now be able to tinker more easily with the genetic makeup of the fruit.

Return of GM?

Back in the early 1990s a genetically modified tomato called the Flavr Savr was the first GM crop licensed for human consumption. It was not a commercial success as public concerns over the technology eventually lead to its demise.

So will the availability of the full genetic sequence and the demand for tastier varieties revitalise the GM effort? Prof Seymour doesn't think so.

"It's very likely at the moment that it will just be better breeding through conventional techniques. The genome sequence allows us to target those gene variants in the wild species and bring them into the cultivated lines and do that relatively effectively."

Dr Gerard Bishop agrees that the knowledge gleaned from the genome will boost conventional breeding.

"It will allow us to breed more pest resistant varieties - And because some of the wild species come from desert locations, there are going to be genes we can breed in that will help mitigate climate change."

But will the publication of the genome shed any light on the perennial debate about whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable? The question gets short shrift from Professor Seymour

"It's botanically a fruit, it's a berry, that's it."

Arts Incubator to Produce and Present Year Round Programming at OSPAC

West Orange, New Jersey, May 29, 2012 ? The New Jersey Arts Incubator (NJAI) has entered into an agreement with the Township of West Orange to begin presenting year round programming at the Oskar Schindler Performing Arts Center (OSPAC). Founded in 2006, NJAI has served the West Orange community by providing arts programs and events including the successful monthly open mic series Caf? Zed, art gallery exhibits, children?s theater workshops, poetry readings, educational workshops and more.

Under the direction of Executive and Artistic Director of the New Jersey Arts Incubator, Carol Berman, OSPAC will add additional artistic disciplines to the programming and work towards creating an all-weather, year round facility. ?I am really excited to build upon the foundation created at OSPAC to bring new and diverse programming to the facility. Our plans include creating a facility that supports our mission, serves the New Jersey artist community and is a gathering place and events location for the residents of West Orange,? said Carol Berman. ?We will both present and produce theater, music, dance, gallery exhibits, classes, summer camp programs and more.?

?The New Jersey Arts Incubator was created in West Orange to be an arts based economic development tool for the community from the onset, while providing New Jersey artists a place and the tools where they could develop their arts based businesses, create and present the world class art that is indicative of our state. Now, NJAI is poised to fully embrace our core mission with this partnership with the Township of West Orange, at the Oskar Schindler Performing Arts Center,? said NJAI founder and Chairwoman Amy Simon. ?In addition to the OSPAC amphitheater building and grounds, there are five additional acres of open space that abut the property which we hope to help the township utilize for art and environmental use, creating an 8+ acre art park for residents and visitors to enjoy.?

?We are all aware of the value of investing in the arts in our communities, not only as a way to engage our residents but also as a way to bolster the economic realities of our small businesses,? said West Orange Mayor Robert Parisi. ?Creating this partnership at OSPAC with the New Jersey Arts Incubator, one of our established West Orange Arts organizations, is a great opportunity for our community.?

About the New Jersey Arts Incubator
The New Jersey Arts Incubator is an organization dedicated to the economic and creative growth of performing and visual artists, musicians and writers in New Jersey. As the product of that goal, NJAI provides education, programming and revenue raising opportunities, and is both a producing and presenting organization.

The mission of NJAI is to act as a community development and revitalization tool for the Township of West Orange, by utilizing and supporting the region?s arts and organizational communities, providing educational opportunities to all socio-economic and cultural groups, establishing local business partnerships, and by creating a destination in, and economic driver for, the Township.

About the Oscar Schindler Performing Arts Center
Oskar Schindler Performing Arts Center, nestled on a mountain ridge next to Crystal Lake in West Orange, New Jersey, was built in 2000 by developer Larry Pantier to honor the famous rescuer of over a thousand Jews during the holocaust, including his father. Mr. Pantier bequeathed, in perpetuity, the facility and five bucolic acres to the township as an arts and entertainment venue. Under the leadership of the Friends of the Oskar Schindler Performing Arts Center and executive director Ms. Kate Baker; OSPAC has grown to be a first class facility known for its world music and jazz festival performances.

SecureIT Plus

Did you get your security suite through a deal with your ISP? If so, you may already be using a branded version of the SecureIT Plus ($5.95/month) suite. However, ISPs don't necessarily know what's best in consumer security products. The quality of the components in SecureIT Plus varies wildly.

The basic SecureIT antivirus is quite a bit cheaper, at $1.95/month for three licenses. The Plus edition offers exactly the same antivirus, the same firewall, and the same phishing protection as the basic edition. SecureIT Plus adds a tuneup component and parental control.

Possibly more importantly, with the Plus edition you get 24/7 help and support. This includes a built-in chat-based help system that strongly resembles that of Password Genie ($15/year direct for five licenses, 3 stars), another product from the same parent company. With your permission, the tech support agent can remotely diagnose and fix problems.

Good Malware Protection, Poor Cleanup
Since the antivirus component is the same as that of SecureIT ($1.95/month direct for three licenses, 3 stars) I'll simply summarize here.

SecureIT's malware removal score of 3.6 points is the lowest achieved by any product tested using either my current collection of malware samples or the previous set. It left behind tons of malware traces from threats it managed to detect and even left some running. Looking specifically at rootkits it scored a dismal 3.2 points. Company representatives concurred that this product is really aimed at keeping clean systems clean, not at dealing with existing infestations. Click below for a score chart. To understand where the scores come from, please read How We Test Malware Removal.

Related Story

In my malware blocking tests, SecureIT soared. With 9.7 of 10 possible points, it has the best score of any product tested using the current set of samples. It detected all the rootkit samples and scored 9.8 points. ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall (free, 3.5 stars) earned 10 points against those same rootkits, but 9.8 is darn good. SecureIT also did a good job at blocking malware downloads. The article ?How We Test Malware Blocking explains how I test products and come up with these scores.

Related Story

Firewall and Phishing Protection
I made sure that SecureIT's antiphishing component was turned on for testing, but it didn't detect a single fraudulent site, not even when I dug up some week-old examples. Consistent antiphishing champion Norton blocked 94 percent. Internet Explorer alone managed to block 45 percent. Don't rely on SecureIT for phishing protection. The chart below details the sad news, and the article How We Test Antiphishing explains exactly how I derive these scores.

Related Story

The firewall component, shared by SecureIT and SecureIT Plus, has its own set of problems. It failed a couple Web-based attack tests, to start with. It nominally controls which programs can access the network, but the only ones I ever observed it blocking were essential Windows processes. A cyber crook could easily write code to disable this product's protection.

The one bright spot in my firewall testing involved exploits. When I attacked the test system using the Core Impact penetration tool, SecureIT blocked 60 percent of the exploits and identified them by name. No exploit managed to break through security. For a more detailed view of the firewall please see my review of the basic, non-Plus SecureIT edition.

Low-Cost Kitchen Improvements for Any Home

Not every home owner can splurge on a total upscale kitchen redo, now pegged on average at $111,000, according to the latest Cost vs. Value Report from Remodeling magazine. Many home owners don?t even have the funds for a minor kitchen remodeling project, which is placed at around $20,000.

But a lack of funds isn?t necessarily the only issue. Even home owners with fat wallets and a love of congregating and cooking in a stylish kitchen may not want to invest so much, given the up-and-down nature of today?s housing market.

Specifically, two factors are holding back home owners from taking on kitchen redos:

? There?s no guarantee that prospective buyers will like, say, the sellers? tangerine-painted walls ? even if orange is oh-so-chic these days ? or that a restaurant-style range will win them over, especially if they?re better at calling for reservations or take-out.

? The dollars invested may never be recouped, no matter how long home owners stay put. An upscale overhaul will return only about 57 percent of the money spent on the project, and a mid-range redo about 66 percent, according to the Cost vs. Value Report.

But the good news for those who still feel their current kitchen won?t do is that there?s loads of inspiration to appeal and borrow ideas from ? those handsome rooms shown in the background of Food Network programs and other TV shows and movies, for example, or glossy home and design magazines.

The kitchen remains an important gathering space for many home owners ? and one of the first places would-be-buyers look to decide if they?re interested in a purchase. Because of that, it should be a goal to make the kitchen as nice as possible with the funds at hand. Even if a seller or real estate agent has $20,000, $10,000, or just $5,000 to spend, those dollars can deliver a lot to make the kitchen look and function better.

Here are a dozen low-cost ideas you and your clients can use to improve this critical room:

? Paint remains the least expensive change agent. Home owners should take their cue from other colors in the room that are likely to stay ? the ?nonperishables,? says Chicago-based designer Mary Lou Kalmus. It might come from the backsplash or floor tile, or if the entire room is swathed in neutrals, it could be colors in the rest of the house, such as in an adjacent family room. Because the kitchen gets heavy use, it?s best if they use at least an eggshell rather than a flat finish.

? Backsplash tiles can be replaced, but Kalmus suggests home owners do so from the base of the upper cabinets down to the countertop ? a full 18 inches is recommended. Top on her list of favorite choices are glass or newer-looking metallic tiles. She also suggests running them vertically rather than horizontally for a less-expected look.

? Replacing a countertop or two can help a room make an instant, fresh impression. And if money?s tight, home owners can go with a laminate rather than granite. To prevent laminate from scratching or showing burn marks, a textured choice is best.

? Tell clients to go with decor icons such as stainless steel that tend to appeal universally, says design expert and author Christopher Lowell, based in Santa Fe, N.M. They can start by replacing some dated and dysfunctional appliances with purchases at places like Sears or Costco, which offer professional-style models that bring a restaurant look at affordable prices. Once home owners introduce stainless options, they may want to run with the idea throughout ? e.g., paper towel holders, trash cans, and cookware, Lowell says.

? If all the older appliances can?t be replaced, home owners might be wise to focus on one or two, which can still make a difference. Because the refrigerator may be the largest item in the room, Kalmus suggests changing it first if it?s old or small and considering a model with French doors, which offers the plus of storing larger items inside both the refrigerator and freezer sections and having a freezer on the bottom. For highly efficient cooking, plus the advantage of having instant on-off heat, an induction cooktop is another wise new appliance choice, though the newer technology often costs more. And even a new hood that?s more updated or visually interesting can provide a good focal point, says Los Angeles?area designer Christoper Grubb, president of Arch-Interiors Design Group.

? Betterlighting can make a huge difference in how much time home owners want to spend in their kitchen and how well it shows to buyers. The best spaces incorporate three essential layers: recessed lighting for an overall effect, with 4-inch rather than 6-inch cans for a less obtrusive look; undercabinet lights to perform tasks, with efficient LEDs or xenon bulbs for quality and energy efficiency; and a decorative fixture or two for mood-making such as pendants, sconces, or a chandelier. Bulbs should depend on manufacturers? recommendations, but now often are halogens or incandescents. ?The decorative choices can add a new design vocabulary to the room,? says San Francisco architect Christian Dauer.

? Small 8-inch floor tiles can quickly date a room, as can busy patterns. So replacing them with 16- to 22-inch porcelain floor tiles may make good economic and design sense, as well as decrease maintenance. A bigger budget may permit natural stone. Dauer is keen on wood floors since they?re easy on feet and favors bamboo and cork or a repeat of a wood used elsewhere in the home.

? Top on the ?get-rid-of list? for many home owners are dark, dated cabinets. But since cabinetry represents 60 percent of many kitchen remodeling budgets, it?s often not possible to replace it totally. Several possibilities exist: Replace the doors or take a less expensive route and repaint them, suggests Kalmus, who also offers some caveats. Be sure the interiors still offer enough room and work well, or else the solution is just a temporary Band-Aid she says, and be sure the paint will cover well since sometimes it won?t if they?re very dark. ?Full-overlay doors, for example, usually can be refaced, but the sides may first need sanding and prepping,? Dauer says. For a different punch, Lowell suggests replacing one or two doors in frosted glass within stainless steel frames, while Grubb throws out the idea of removing the fronts completely for a European look. In most cases, new spiffy knobs can make a huge improvement.

? For those without sufficient storage??a common complaint of older or poorly arranged kitchens ? try finding a closet even if not right in the kitchen but in an adjacent space. The best pantries are equipped with shelves of different heights to arrange a variety of canned goods and with pull-out drawers to make reaching to the back easier.

? Because open layouts are high on many buyers? wish lists, taking down a wall or part of one between a kitchen and adjacent space should be considered if the kitchen is small and closed in and the wall isn?t a load-bearing, supporting one. Be careful that vents aren?t running through it, or be prepared to replace them, Kalmus says. If this isn?t possible, home owners might change out windows or doors for better light, views, and insulation. A new greenhouse-style window can become a spot to grow herbs and small plants.

? If home owners have room for an island, but are tight on funds, they might buy a gleaming, stainless-steel, counter-height table from a local restaurant supply store with a shelf underneath, add a few chopping boards from the same supply, and create a professional-looking center they can take with them, says Lowell. This addition also helps free other countertops of clutter.

? If the ultimate goal still is to gain a brand new kitchen when dollars permit, a better use of limited funds may be to hire an architect or designer skilled in kitchen planning to draw up a detailed layout that can be bid out later. Many design pros charge a flat fee or hourly rate. Dauer says the price will vary depending on the part of the country, size of the room, wish list, and extent of the remodeling work ? if plumbing or HVAC systems need to be changed or walls taken down. His best guess is from $135 on up per hour. Chicago architect Allan J. Grant pegs it at between $90 and $150, depending on the person?s experience, plus reimbursable expenses.

Google, Samsung unveil new version of Chromebook

(AP) ? Google will try to win more converts to a computer operating system revolving around its popular Chrome Web browser with a new wave of lightweight laptops built by Samsung Electronics.

Tuesday's release of the next-generation Chromebooks will give Google and Samsung another opportunity to persuade consumers and businesses to buy an unconventional computer instead of machines running on familiar software by industry pioneers Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc.

Unlike most computers, Google's Chromebooks don't have a hard drive. They function like terminals dependent on an Internet connection. The laptops come with 16 gigabytes of flash memory ? the kind found in smartphones, tablet computers and some iPods. Two USB ports allow external hard drives and other devices to be plugged into the machines.

Chromebooks haven't made much of a dent in the market since their debut a year ago. In that time, more people have been embracing Apple's iPad and other tablet computers ? a factor that has contributed to a slowdown in sales of personal computers.

The cool reception to Chromebooks has raised questions about whether Google misjudged the demand for computers designed to quickly connect to its dominant Internet search engine and ever-expanding stable of other online services, ranging from email to a recently introduced file-storage system called Drive.

"The Chromebooks have had less to offer than tablets, so they haven't been that interesting to consumers," said Gartner analyst Mika Kitagawa.

Google says it always intended to take things slowly with the Chromebooks to give its engineers time to understand the shortcomings of the machines and make the necessary improvements.

"This release is a big step in the journey to bringing (Chromebooks) to the mainstream," said Sundar Pichai, Google's senior vice president of Chrome and apps.

The upgraded laptop, called "Series 5 550," is supposed to run two-and-half times faster than the original machines, and boasts higher-definition video. Google also added features that will enable users to edit documents offline, read more content created in widely used Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel, and retrieve material from another computer at home or an office. More emphasis is being placed on Chrome's Web store, which features more than 50,000 applications.

The price: $449 for models that only connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi and $549 for a machine that connects on a 3G network. Samsung's original Chromebooks started out with prices ranging from $429 to $499. Like the original Chromebooks, the next-generation machines feature a 12.1-inch screen display and run on an Intel processor.

Google Inc. and Samsung also are introducing a "Chromebox" that can be plugged into a display monitor to create the equivalent of desktop computer. The box will sell for $329.

The latest Chromebook and new Chromebox will be available online only, beginning in the U.S. on Tuesday, followed by a Wednesday release in the United Kingdom. The products will go on sale in brick-and-mortar stores for the first time in still-to-be-determined Best Buy locations next month.

The expansion beyond Internet-only sales signals Google's determination to attract a mass audience to its Chromebooks, just as it's done with smartphones running on its Android software. More than 300 million mobile devices have been activated on Android since the software's 2008 release.

Without providing specifics, Pichai said several other computer manufacturers will release Chromebooks later this year. Google plans to back the expanded line of Chromebooks with a marketing blitz during the holiday shopping season in November and December.

One reason Google is confident Chromebooks will eventually catch on is because the Chrome Web browser has attracted so many fans in less than four years on the market. The company says more than 200 million people worldwide currently are using the Chrome browser.

Like other laptop and desktop computers, the Chromebooks will have to contend with the accelerating shift to the iPad and other tablets. The iPad 2, an older version of Apple's tablet line, sells for as little as $399, undercutting the new Chromebook. Other low-cost tablets are expected to hit the market later this year. One of them might even be made by Motorola Mobility, a device maker that Google bought for $12.5 billion earlier this month. Google so far hasn't commented on Motorola's future plans for the tablet market.

The new Chromebooks also are hitting the market at a time when some prospective computer buyers may be delaying purchases until they can check out machines running on Windows 8, a makeover of Microsoft's operating system that is expected to be released in September or October. Microsoft designed Windows 8 so it can be controlled through touch as well as keyboards. That versatility is expected to inspire the creation of hybrid machines that are part laptop, part tablet.

Google shares added $2.81 Tuesday to close at $594.34.

AAXA P3

With its 50-lumen rating, the LCOS-based AAXA P3 ($270 street) isn't the brightest pico projector available. The ?Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector ($450 street, 3 stars), for one, claims 100 lumens. However, the P3 is bright for the price, and it offers any number of additional features that you might not expect at such a low cost, starting with an HDMI port and the ability to read files from a USB memory key. The combination makes it well worth considering.

One complicating factor is the 1,024 by 600 native resolution. This is better resolution than you'll find in most pico projectors, and generally counts as a plus. Both the PK320 and the Editors' Choice Optoma PK301 Pico Pocket Projector ($400 street, 4 stars), for example, offer WVGA (854 by 480). On the negative side, however, 1024 by 600 is unusual enough that most computers don't support it. If you set your computer to another widescreen resolution, like 854 by 480 or 1280 by 800, you'll introduce scaling artifacts caused by adding or dropping pixels to make the image match the projector's resolution.

Among other issues, the artifacts can make text harder to read. The alternative is to stay with standard SVGA (800 by 600), which will avoid the scaling artifacts and give you better image quality than with lower-resolution projectors, but that limits you to a 4:3 aspect ratio. As a practical matter, you may want to stay with 800 by 600 to get crisper data images and reserve the widescreen capability for video.

Basics, Setup, and Connections
As with any pico projector, one of the P3's key strengths is its portability. Measuring only 1.4 by 2.6 by 4.6 inches (HWD) and weighing 7.5 ounces, it's small and light enough for a shirt pocket. The power block adds 4 more ounces, but you can also run the P3 from its rechargeable battery, so you don't necessarily have to carry the power block on every trip. You'll probably want to bring it most of the time, however, since the claimed battery life is only 65 minutes.

Setup is mostly standard fare for a pico projector, with an assortment of adaptors to let you connect to a composite video source, a USB memory key (to read common image, audio and movie files), or a computer (using a VGA port). In addition AAXA also sells adaptors (at $12.99 to $19.99 direct each) for iPod, Zune, and PSP connections. The one connector worth special mention, because it's unusual for a pico projector, is a full-size HDMI port, for a computer or video source.

Brightness and Image Quality
The P3's 50-lumen rating is admittedly meager compared with most full-size projectors, but it's reasonably bright for a pico projector. As a practical matter, based on the SMPTE recommendations for brightness, 50 lumens is bright enough for a roughly 28- to 37-inch diagonal image at a 16:9 aspect ratio in theater-dark lighting.

One moderate issue is a problem maintaining uniform brightness across the entire screen. On the test unit, I saw vertical strips on both the extreme left and right sides that were noticeably dimmer than the rest of the screen. The issue showed only in screens with light color backgrounds, but is noticeable enough that some people might find it distracting.

Data image quality at 600 by 800 resolution was better than most pico projectors, with the P3 scoring relatively well on our standard suite of DisplayMate tests. Color balance was good, with suitably neutral grays over the entire range from black to white; colors were nicely saturated; and I saw only the slightest pixel jitter with an analog connection on screens that are designed to bring out jitter. Text was easy to read at sizes as small as 9 points.

Video quality was also good for a pico projector, with the P3 doing a reasonably good job in my tests of retaining shadow detail (details based on shading in dark areas) and resisting posterization (shading changing suddenly where it should change gradually.)

Also very much on the plus side is that the P3 shows far fewer rainbow artifacts?with bright areas breaking up into little red-green-blue rainbows?than most pico projectors. Even if you're sensitive to the effect, as I am, it's not likely that you'll see the artifacts often enough with either data or video images to find them annoying.

Other Issues
As is standard for pico projectors, the P3 uses LEDs for its light source. More important, the LEDs are meant to last the life of the projector, with a rated 15,000 hour lifetime, so you won't have to spend money on replacement lamps. As is also standard, the 1-watt speakers are hardly worth having. If you need sound, however, the audio out port lets you plug in a headset or external powered speaker.

It would be easier to give the P3 an enthusiastic recommendation if it offered a native resolution that was more widely supported. But even if you ignore the widescreen capability and treat it as astandard SVGA projector, there's still a lot to like. Its balance of small size, low weight, reasonable battery life, and good data and video image quality adds up to a strong argument for the P3. Factor in such niceties as the HDMI port plus the ability to read files from a USB key, and the combination makes the P3 a more than reasonable choice at an attractive price.

Pope's butler vows to help Vatican scandal probe

FILE - In this March 23, 2012 file photo, Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone, left, looks on as Pope Benedict XVI talks to journalists during a press conference aboard the flight to Silao, Mexico. An already sordid scandal over leaked Vatican documents took a Hollywood-like turn Saturday, May 26, 2012 with confirmation that the pope's own butler had been arrested after documents he had no business having were found in his Vatican City apartment. The "Vatileaks" scandal has seriously embarrassed the Vatican at a time when it is trying to show the world financial community that it has turned a page and shed its reputation as a scandal plagued tax haven. Bertone, 77, has been blamed for a series of gaffes and management problems that have plagued Benedict's papacy and, according to the leaked documents, generated a not inconsiderable amount of ill will directed at him from other Vatican officials. (AP Photo/Gregorio Borgia, File)

FILE - In this Monday, April 21, 2008 file photo, Pope Benedict XVI, left, arrives at the Italian air force 31st Squadron base in Ciampino, 30 kilometers (19 miles) southeast of Rome, on his way back from a six-day trip to the U.S. including the U.N. and Ground Zero in New York. The Vatican has confirmed Saturday, May 26, 2012, that the pope's butler Paolo Gabriele, at right carrying bags, was arrested in an embarrassing leaks scandal. Spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said Paolo Gabriele, a layman, was arrested in his home inside Vatican City with secret documents in his possession. This file photo taken Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, shows the building, left, which hosts the Vatican bank, formerly known as the Institute for Religious Operas, I.O.R., inside the Vatican. Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, head of the I.O.R. was ousted after a no-confidence vote of the I.O.R. governing body on Thursday, May 24, 2012. The "Vatileaks" scandal has seriously embarrassed the Vatican at a time during which it is trying to show the world financial community that it has turned a page and shed its reputation as a scandal plagued tax haven. Vatican documents leaked to the press in recent months have undermined that effort, alleging corruption in Vatican finance as well as internal bickering over the Holy See's efforts to show more transparency in its financial operations. But perhaps most critically, the leaks have seemed aimed at one main goal: to discredit Pope Benedict XVI's No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state. (AP Photo/Domenico Stinellis)

(AP) ? The biggest scandal to rock the Vatican in decades widened Monday with the pope's butler, arrested for allegedly having confidential documents in his home, agreeing to cooperate with investigators ? raising the specter that higher-ranking ecclesial heads may soon roll.

Few believe butler Paolo Gabriele worked alone to leak dozens of documents shedding light on power struggles, corruption and intrigue inside the highest levels of the Catholic Church. The leaks have tormented the Vatican for months and painted a picture of a church hierarchy in utter disarray.

Gabriele, the pope's personal butler since 2006, was arrested Wednesday evening after Holy See documents were found inside his Vatican City apartment, adding an unfathomable Hollywood twist to the already sordid Vatileaks scandal. He remains in custody in a Vatican detention facility, accused of theft, and has met with his wife and lawyers.

Gabriele's lawyer, Carlo Fusco, said Monday his client was "very serene and calm," despite the whirlwind of speculation surrounding his arrest. He said Gabriele himself had told the Vatican judge investigating the case that he would "respond to all the questions and will collaborate with investigators to ascertain the truth."

Italian media reported Monday that a cardinal is suspected of playing a major role in the scandal. However, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, denied the reports categorically. He said many Vatican officials were being questioned but insisted "there is no cardinal under suspicion."

But Lombardi acknowledged that the investigation continues.

He also dismissed as "pure fantasy" a rash of other unsourced reports about the investigation in the Italian media, which have been on a frenzy ever since reports of Gabriele's detention emerged Friday.

Gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three, was always considered extremely loyal to Benedict and his predecessor, John Paul II, for whom he briefly served. Vatican insiders have said they were baffled by his alleged involvement, and Lombardi said Monday that the entire scandal has caused pain throughout the Vatican.

Pope Benedict XVI, who in March appointed a commission of cardinals to investigate the leaks, was being kept informed of developments and is "aware of the delicate situation that the Roman curia is going through," Lombardi said.

He acknowledged the "negative image" of the Vatican that was emerging from the scandal but said the developments made it ever more important to "reestablish a climate of clarity, truth, transparency and trust as soon as possible."

He said the Vatican intended to confront the scandal head on "clearly and without hiding anything to try to fully understand the situation."

The Vatileaks scandal broke in January when Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi broadcast letters from the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope in which he begged not to be transferred for having exposed alleged corruption that cost the Holy See millions of euros in higher contract prices. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican's U.S. ambassador.

The scandal widened over the following months with documents leaked to Italian journalists that laid bare power struggles inside the Vatican over its efforts to show greater financial transparency and comply with international norms to fight money laundering. There was even a leak of a memo claiming that Benedict would die this year.

The scandal reached a peak last weekend, when Nuzzi published an entire book based on a trove of new documentation, including personal correspondence to and from the pope and his private secretary, much of which paints Benedict's No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, in a negative light.

Vito Mancuso, an Italian theologian, told reporters at a press launch of the book "His Holiness" that the documents, many of which point to Bertone's involvement in scandals that have afflicted the papacy, all appeared aimed at providing evidence for why he should resign.

"Looking at the documents in succession, it seems like you're seeing a series of bullets aimed at hitting Bertone," Mancuso said.

Bertone, 77, was Benedict's loyal No. 2 at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith before being named secretary of state. With no diplomatic or broad administrative experience coming into the job, he has earned not a few critics inside the Vatican bureaucracy.

The Vatican probe into the leaks is actually working on several tracks: Vatican magistrates are pursuing the criminal investigation, and Gabriele was arrested as part of that. The Vatican secretariat of state is pursuing an administrative probe. And the three cardinals appointed by Benedict are acting in a sort of supervisory role, looking beyond the narrow criminal scope of the leaks to interview broadly across the Vatican bureaucracy, Lombardi said.

They report directly to the pope and can both share information with Vatican prosecutors and receive information from them, Lombardi said.

The group is headed by Cardinal Julian Herranz, an Opus Dei prelate who headed the Vatican's legal office as well as the disciplinary commission of the Vatican bureaucracy before retiring.

Gabriele's arrest occurred almost simultaneously with another stunning development inside the secretive walls of the Vatican: the ouster of Benedict's hand-picked president of the Vatican bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, himself close to Opus. The bank's board took a vote of no-confidence last week to oust him for failing to do his job.

And it came amid new developments in one of the Vatican's most enduring mysteries, the case of Emanuela Orlandi, the 15-year-old daughter of a Vatican employee who disappeared in 1983 while on her way to a music lesson in Rome.

On Sunday, Orlandi's brother led a march to the Vatican in hope that Benedict would offer them a prayer following the unearthing of the tomb of a mobster alleged to have kidnapped her. The tomb, inside an Opus Dei church in Rome, yielded hundreds of old bone fragments that are being examined for a trace of the girl.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? A handwritten sign that said "whites hate blacks" and was carried by one of more than 2,000 protesters in Johannesburg on Tuesday shows that a fierce national debate over a painting depicting the president's genitals is about more than art and the constitution.

Mapule Kgomo, a black woman from the outskirts of Johannesburg who wrote the sign, said she drew her conclusion about fellow South Africans who are white after seeing the painting, titled "The Spear," that a white South African had made of President Jacob Zuma, who is black.

"I hate whites passionately after that painting," she added. "I'm so hurt."

On Tuesday, a spokesman for the Goodman Gallery said it has agreed to remove images of the painting from its website. The painting itself had already been removed from the gallery after it was defaced last week.

But the passionate feelings about the painting don't seem ready to subside. If anything, the protests and comment have been amplified because much of it is taking place on social network sites.

The debate is part of an ongoing discussion in this young democracy about whether white South Africans are insensitive and to what extent black South Africans still feel they are treated as second class citizens, even though the country is governed by Zuma's African National Congress. The ANC led the fight against apartheid before becoming a political party.

Zuma has asked the High Court to rule that his constitutional right to dignity was violated when the gallery put the painting on display earlier this month. The gallery and artist Brett Murray argue they are defending the constitutional right to freedom of expression.

"I am not a racist," Murray said in an affidavit filed in the court case, which is still under way. "I do not produce art with an intention to hurt, humiliate or insult."

Liza Essers, owner of the Goodman Gallery, says she regrets "the divisiveness that the exhibition has caused.

"It was never my intention to cause hurt to any person," Essers said in a statement last week.

The issue is not black and white.

Black artists filed affidavits supporting Murray. And a white man and a black man entered the gallery to deface the painting, saying they were acting independently of each other and wanted to defend Zuma. The two were arrested and face trespassing charges.

Murray said in his court affidavit that the intention of his Zuma painting, part of a show that criticized the ANC, was to express a sense of betrayal that some post-apartheid leaders were greedy or corrupt. He also said that details of Zuma's sex life had become part of the public debate in South Africa.

Zuma, 70, has been married six times ? he currently has four wives, as his Zulu culture allows. He has 21 children, and acknowledged in 2010 that he fathered a child that year with a woman who was not among his wives.

Tuesday's protest wound about a kilometer (half mile) from a usually quiet park in an upscale Johannesburg neighborhood to a corner just south of the gallery. Along the way, black women in maid's aprons and black men in gardener's overalls stood on the balconies of homes in the largely white residential neighborhood to cheer on the marchers.

The gallery had replaced pieces from Murray's show in its windows with signs reading: "The Goodman Gallery respects your right to protest."

ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu addressed the crowd outside the gallery, saying, "We refuse to be painted as inferior citizens of this country."

South African Communist Party leader Blade Nzimande, a Zuma ally, compared the case to a hate speech suit a group that lobbies for white South Africans brought against an ANC leader who had insisted on continuing to sing a song from the apartheid era that calls for killing whites. The judge in that case banned the song.

Nzimande said some have asked why Zuma supporters went to court, as the white group did, instead of trying to speak to the artist and the gallery to find a solution.

"You can't have a dialogue with a person who is actually insulting you," Nzimande said.

Kgomo, the protester, said that despite the division vividly on display Tuesday, a resolution was possible.

"If they apologize to our president, then it will be enough for us," she said.
