Green Throttle Games introduces the Atlas ... - Android Community

As if one Android gaming controller today wasn?t enough, Green Throttle Games has revealed its new Atlas controller. Like the other Android controllers before it, the Atlas looks to solve the problem of touchscreen controls in mobile gaming, but there are a few little quirks that make the Atlas stand out. For one, Green Throttle Games is actually making some first-party titles that will be compatible with the Atlas, so there will be at least a few Atlas-enhanced games ready to go from the start.

The Atlas connects to your phone through Bluetooth, but it?s only compatible with handsets that support HDMI out through mobile high-definition link or microHDMI. That?s because you?ll be hooking your phone up to your TV to use the Atlas, and that might prove to be something of an issue for some mobile users. In any case, the video that has been put together by Green Throttle suggests that the company wants to turn your phone into all the gaming console you?ll ever need, and you can check it out below.

Green Throttle has some pretty big names attached to it too, including CEO and co-founder Charles Huang, who was one of the co-founders of Red Octane ? the company the brought us Guitar Hero. The Atlas isn?t available commercially yet, but developers can pre-order their own controller from Green Throttle?s website to begin developing Atlas-supported apps to have ready at launch. The Atlas sports a pre-order price of $44.95, which is about the going rate for gaming controllers these days.

The Atlas doesn?t have a firm release date yet, though developer kit pre-orders will begin shipping on December 12. We?re interested to see where the Atlas goes, but there are already so many Android gaming controllers on the market that Green Throttle might have a difficult time sticking out from the crowd. What do you think? Will the Atlas be a success when it launches?

New study finds majority of pregnant women require an average of 2 months sick leave from work

New study finds majority of pregnant women require an average of 2 months sick leave from work

Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Three quarters of pregnant women take sick leave from work but employers can help reduce this through flexible work adjustments, suggests a new study published today (7 November) in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The study looked at women scheduled to give birth, at the Akershus University Hospital in Norway over an 18 month period and the prevalence of, reasons for and factors associated with sick leave during their pregnancies.

Researchers gathered information via a questionnaire conducted at week 17 and week 32 from a total of 2,918 women, of which 2,197 (or just over 75%) received sick leave at some point during their pregnancy.

The study found that women took an average of eight weeks sick leave, ranging from one to 40 weeks, the majority needed between four to 16 weeks. The factors associated with sick leave varied according to trimester of pregnancy with more women requiring time off as their pregnancies progressed. By week 32, 63% of the women were taking sick leave.

Overall 35% of women sited fatigue and sleep problems as the main reason for taking sick leave, followed closely by pelvic girdle pain (pain caused by limited mobility and functioning of the pelvis joints) and nausea or vomiting, with 32% and 23% of women suffering these symptoms respectively.

While very few women (2.1%) sited anxiety or depression as a reason for their sick leave, they recorded the longest average of sick leave taken at 20 weeks.

The study also looked at work adjustments for pregnant women and found 60% of the 2,197 women reported having adjustments made to their working situation. On average these women reported taking seven days less sick leave than those who went without job adjustments.

Dr Signe Dorheim, Division of Psychiatry, Stavanger University Hospital, Norway and co-author of the paper said:

"We found that a large number of pregnant women take time off work as sick leave. The factors associated with sick leave varied according to the trimester of pregnancy but some of these factors are not necessarily caused by pregnancy alone.

"While past medical history and socioeconomic conditions can influence the occurrence and length of time taken off as sick leave, women's working situations during pregnancy were significant contributors to our findings.

"Women who suffer from work-related fatigue, such as insomnia, are likely to require more time off, especially during late pregnancy.

"Further research is needed to look at how treatment of certain conditions and work adjustments can lead to less time being taken off work and ultimately a better quality of life for pregnant women."

John Thorp, BJOG Deputy-Editor-in-Chief added:

"This study was conducted in Norway, where sick leave entitlements allow workers to receive very good compensation for time taken due to illness, so this may impact the findings.

"However, the factors that affect pregnant women in the workplace are universal and this study shows a clear link between working conditions and the duration of sick leave, which highlights the potential benefits for employers to have a support system in place. "Pregnancy is a normal physiological state, however, it can affect women in different ways. If a woman is concerned she should talk to her employer, GP or midwife for support."

Federer opens with straight-set win at ATP finals

LONDON (AP) ? Roger Federer opened his quest for a seventh season-ending tour title, looking like the man to beat again.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion won his record 40th match at the tournament, defeating Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-1 Tuesday in his opening Group B match.

Federer lost only eight points on his serve under the roof of the O2 Arena while converting four of his nine break points in the event that features the top eight players in the world.

"Obviously, come in knowing that I've played so well past years, I expect myself also to be at a solid level," said Federer, who also won his seventh Wimbledon title this year and won a silver medal at the London Olympics. "I've had a good year. It's true, I feel like I'm striking the ball well after today. I hope it's a sign for more to come."

A day after Andy Murray made his return to Britain for the first time since winning the U.S. Open, the crowd got into Tuesday's match, complete with cowbells ringing and constant chanting for Federer.

"I'm very, very honored, really, and very proud in some ways to be so well liked by so many fans around the world, just not in one particular place or one country," said Federer, who will next face David Ferrer on Thursday. "It really seems to be everywhere I go I get a lot of fan support."

The Swiss star didn't disappoint them, looking like he was right at home right from the start.

He held at love to open the match and broke Tipsarevic for a 2-0 lead that held the rest of the way. In the second set, Tipsarevic held serve to start, but couldn't win another game as Federer dazzled the fans with a couple of behind-the-back shots off Tipsarevic serves that had nipped the net.

"The problem was that he got an early break in both sets," Tipsarevic said. "Everybody knows that when Roger starts leading, he is probably the best player in the world when he's a break up early in the set."

Tipsarevic was playing for the first time since retiring with dizziness and fatigue during his quarterfinal match at the Paris Masters last week.

"I felt good in the first set," Tipsarevic said. "Even though I lost it, I didn't lose the first set because I was feeling bad, whatever. But later on when we played these longer rallies, my serve started to suffer a little bit."

Federer didn't play in Paris, pulling out to rest up for London.

"I still had some little things I had to work through the last couple of days. Really since yesterday, I feel fine," Federer said.

Federer twice won the season-ending tournament when it was in Houston in 2003-04, and then won two more in Shanghai in 2006-07. In London, he is the two-time defending champion.

The victory moved him out of tie with Ivan Lendl for the most wins at the tournament.

In the other Group B match, Ferrer beat Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Industrialists to protest over extra land charges - Real Estate India

??|?? November 6, 2012 ?? 09:23pm ??|Contributed by manoja

As many as 10,000 protesters, comprising largely of industrialists and their employees, will take to streets on Friday over the issue of payment of enhanced compensation to farmers whose land was acquired for development of Industrial Model Township (IMT), Manesar. The issue has turned into a major bone of contention between the industrialists and township promoter, the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructural Development Corporation (HSIIDC). The HSIIDC had paid Rs. 4 lakh per acre to the displaced farmers in early 1990s when IMT, Manesar was being developed.

The farmers, however, moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court which ordered the compensation to be increased to Rs. 20 lakh per acre.

The HSIIDC moved the Supreme Court against the high court order.

However, its plea was dismissed by the apex court.

The industrial corporation?s two review petitions in the apex court also went against it.

Though the HSIIDC has started the process of releasing money in the wake of the Supreme Court order, it has simultaneously been asking industrialists to pay up as the buyer-seller agreement between industrialists and HSIIDC states that the enhancement costs have to be borne by the plot owners.

Industrialists, however, say that HSIIDC should foot the enhanced cost itself and not burden the plot owners as the industry body has raised and amassed huge money over the years.

?The major challenge for Manesar Industries Welfare Association (MIWA) now is to fight the legal case,? said industrialist and MIWA joint secretary Jagdish Kukreja.
